How to Grow Your Email List as a Family Photographer

You do not sell courses. You have no Trello board, no PDF, and no digital product sitting in a shop tab, and you have zero desire to make one. You sell sessions, period. So why does every email list tip you find seem written for online business owners who not only photograph but also work in education (aka are online business owners)?

I say that with love, since I sell digital products on the education side of my work. I am Dolly DeLong, a Nashville-based family and motherhood photographer and a systems and workflow educator, and I run both sides of my business on the same email platform. This post walks you through how to grow your email list as a family photographer who sells one thing and one thing only: sessions. No digital product required, and no, you do not have to start a podcast or a YouTube channel.

The short answer is that you borrow audiences that already belong to your ideal client. A local vendor giveaway, a guest blog swap, and a guest spot on a local podcast or news segment all put you in front of local moms who already trust someone in your community, and each one sends them to one opt-in.

Before you plan any of it, grab my no-cost Lead Magnet Master Idea List so you have a strong opt-in ready when those new families show up.

Can You Grow an Email List Without Selling Digital Products?

Yes. A family photographer can grow an email list with local partners who serve the same mom (aka the client) and one helpful opt-in.

No shop tab needed.

Most list-building advice assumes you will trade a workbook for an email address, but your future client does not want a workbook. She wants to know where to take family photos in your city, what everyone should wear, and how to survive a session with a toddler who has opinions. Your lead magnet answers one of those questions, and your partners help you get it in front of her.

Every strategy below requires one thing: an email platform that is set up and ready before you pitch a single partner. I have used Flodesk since around 2021 for my photography business and my education business, and you can grab my Flodesk discount code here (affiliate link). Strategy Who You Partner With What You Need When to Plan It
Local vendor giveaway 3 to 5 local businesses who serve your ideal client A gifted session, written terms, one entry form 2 to 3 months before a holiday or season
Guest blog swap A stylist, boutique, hair and makeup artist, or venue One guest post each way and one opt-in link Ahead of your busy season
Local podcast or news guest spot Parenting podcasts, mom shows, community news A pitch, a topic, and one resource to mention Ahead of the season you are pitching

What Is a Local Vendor Giveaway for Family Photographers?

A local vendor giveaway bundles your session with gifts from 3 to 5 local businesses. It runs as one prize, one entry form, and shared promotion. This is the strategy I would start planning this week.

Pick three to five local businesses who serve the same mom you serve, like a hair and makeup artist, an esthetician, a nail tech, a boutique that can dress the whole family, or a local jewelry shop. Each business gifts a service or product, you gift a session, and the whole bundle becomes one prize with one entry form. Every partner promotes the giveaway, so you get in front of their people, and they get in front of yours. One family wins, and you walk away with a segmented list of local moms who raised their hand during the exact season they were thinking about photos, and OH M GEEEE, that is the list growth a session-only business needs.

Plan Two to Three Months Ahead

Look at the calendar and find the next holiday or season that matters to your clients. If you are reading this in January, plan around Mother’s Day if it is the end of spring; plan around summer. If it is October, your holiday giveaway needs to be planned now, not in November and for sure not in December. Your partners need that lead time to plan their own promotion.

Choose Partners You Trust

Only invite business owners you know, who are trusted in your community and follow through on their word. Their reputation is attached to yours the moment the giveaway goes live. Make sure whatever they give in the giveaway adds value and makes the holiday bundle (or whatever bundle you choose) incredible and one-of-a-kind!  Also make sure that the co-business owners you are working with have email lists as well!

Put the Terms and Conditions in Writing

I learned this one the hard way. Years ago, when I was starting my family photography business, I ran a giveaway to get my name in front of more families. The family who won was so excited, but they did not use the session that fall or the next spring. They came back two years later, ready to cash in, and by then my business had grown and the value of that session was a whole different number. That experience is why I tell every photographer to set clear terms for themselves and for every vendor involved before the giveaway goes live. Decide on these details before you post a single graphic:

  • Redemption window: a specific date, or a window of three, six, or twelve months. I recommend a one-year expiration at the most.
  • What the prize includes: session length, number of images, and what’s not included.
  • Each partner’s terms: every vendor sets and shares their own redemption rules.
  • Where the terms live: on the entry form and on every social post promoting the giveaway.

I am not a lawyer, so I lean on vetted templates. I use The Legal Paige for my contracts and website terms, and you can find photographer contracts here with code DOLLY10 for 10% off (affiliate link). a blog banner that is advertising the legal paige which is a contract shop for creative minded business owners

How Does a Guest Blog Swap Help Photographers Grow an Email List?

A guest blog swap trades posts with a local stylist or boutique. Each audience reads helpful advice and finds one link to your opt-in page. Photographers skip this strategy because we assume we can only swap with other photographers or visual businesses. You are not swapping with a competitor. You are swapping with a local stylist, a hair and makeup artist, a boutique owner, or a venue that already talks to the families you want to photograph, and here is how the swap works:

  1. Invite a local stylist to write for you. Ask them to write “What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in [Your City].” Publish it on your blog with a link to the stylist, then promote it together. Again, make sure you use keywords your ideal clients would normally type into Google or an AI search!
  2. Write a post for the stylist’s audience. Your topic can be how to prepare for a family session. Make it juicy and helpful, because this is your first impression with a brand new audience.
  3. Add one link to your opt-in page. Point readers to your best lead magnet, such as “My Top 7 Spots for Family Photos in [Your City].”
  4. Repurpose the post. One guest post becomes an Instagram carousel, a client prep email, and a newsletter feature.

Should Family Photographers Pitch Local Podcasts or News Segments?

Yes. Local parenting podcasts, mom shows, and community news segments talk to the families you want to photograph. You never have to host one. Do not worry, I am not telling you to start a podcast. These shows talk to local families every single week, and their hosts need guests, so pitch yourself as the local expert on family photos. Now, if you cannot find a podcaster who talks to local families, try your local news station. I know it sounds a little cheesy, but I would bet there is a station in your area that runs segments for local families. Video can feel intimidating, so pitch what feels doable and lead with topics that help families, such as:

  • What to wear for fall family sessions in [Your City]
  • The best local spots for family photos
  • How to survive a photo session with a toddler who has opinions
  • Just a topic that you know your local audience would really benefit from!

You come in as the expert, so bring one resource people can grab and give a short, easy-to-say web address for it. Nobody listening in the car will remember a long link.

What Lead Magnet Should a Family Photographer Use for Collaborations?

Use one opt-in that helps a future client plan her session, like a local location guide, a what-to-wear guide, or a session prep checklist. It would be pointless to run all three collaborations without a way for people to join your list, so your lead magnet needs to solve a real planning problem for a local mom. A location guide works well with a podcast spot, a what-to-wear guide pairs with a stylist swap, and a prep checklist fits inside a giveaway welcome email. If you are stuck on what to create, the Lead Magnet Master Idea List gives you ideas built for family photographers. Once those new subscribers are ready to book, send them to a contact page that does its job, and my no-cost guide on how to create a contact page that wows walks you through it.

What Should You Do This Week to Start Growing Your List?

Look two to three months ahead, pick your season, list at least five local vendors who serve your ideal client, and send pitches by Friday. Here is your action step for this week, so grab your calendar and work through this list in one sitting: Look two to three months ahead and choose the holiday or season you want to plan around.

  1. Write down at least five local vendors who serve your ideal client.
  2. Decide which strategy fits that season best: the giveaway, the blog swap, or the guest spot.
  3. Send your outreach emails before the end of the week.

YES, that is the whole assignment. Pick one strategy, nail it, and add the next one when you have room. If you want weekly email guidance so your new subscribers hear from you on a regular schedule, The Family Photographer’s Marketing Society gives you a weekly Instagram and email marketing plan built for solo family photographers. Frequently Asked Questions About Growing Your Email List as a Family Photographer

Do I need a digital product to grow my email list as a family photographer? No. You need one opt-in that helps a future client plan her session and a few local partners who share your ideal client. A location guide or what-to-wear guide works without an online digital shop.

How many vendors should I include in a local giveaway? Three to five local businesses is the sweet spot. You get a prize worth entering without turning coordination into a second job.

How long should a giveaway session stay valid? Set a clear redemption window in writing before the giveaway launches. I recommend one year at the most, and shorter windows of three or six months work too.

Can I do a guest blog swap with another photographer? You can, but this strategy works best with non-competing local businesses. Stylists, boutiques, hair and makeup artists, and venues already talk to your ideal client.

What should I pitch to a local podcast or news station? Pitch a topic that helps local families. Topics like what to wear for fall sessions, the best local spots for photos, and surviving a session with a toddler who has opinions all work.

Meet Your Favorite Marketing Strategist and Business Coach for Family Photographers (Dolly DeLong Education)

Headshot-of-Nashville-Newborn-Photographer-Dolly-DeLong-Photography-who-is-also-a-marketing-educator-for-family-photographers

Hi, I’m Dolly DeLong, a Nashville-based family photographer, marketing strategist, and systems educator for family photographers who want structure, clarity, and consistency in their marketing.

My photography journey began in 2006, and over the years, I built a sustainable family photography business while navigating motherhood, client work, and the realities of running a solo creative business. Along the way, I discovered something unexpected: I loved the backend just as much as the creative side.

What started as organizing my own workflows turned into helping other family photographers simplify their marketing, build repeatable systems, and stop relying on last-minute posting or panic marketing.

Today, I focus exclusively on helping family photographers intentionally market their businesses (not with trends but with consistently showing up).

I offer two ways to work with me:

Through my blog, podcast, and YouTube channel, I teach family photographers how to think like marketers, plan ahead, and create marketing rhythms that support both their business and their family life.

I still photograph families around Nashville because it’s one of my greatest joys. But helping family photographers build calm, consistent marketing systems that actually fit real life is a close second.

I’m so glad you are here, reading this blog, listening to the podcast, or watching the embedded YouTube video. I hope this educational content was helpful. Please let me know what future systems content you would like me to create!
