You know email marketing matters for your family photography business. You have heard it a hundred times. And yet, something keeps you from hitting send. If your email marketing mindset as a family photographer sounds anything like “nobody wants to hear from me” or “what if they unsubscribe,” this blog post and podcast episode is for you.
Maybe you dread the thought of landing in someone’s inbox. Maybe you saw an unsubscribe notification last week and spiraled for 20 minutes. Or maybe you wrote one sales email six months ago, heard crickets, and decided that was enough evidence to stop.
I just want to say, I get it. I have been there. And that is why I sat down with Kate Doster, online business pro and host of the Do The Brave Thing Podcast, to hash out the limiting beliefs that hold so many of us back from email marketing. Fair warning: this conversation turned into what I can only describe as an email marketing therapy session.
If you want the full conversation, you can listen to our podcast episode below (keep in mind we did mention a summit that has passed), but this is still relevant no matter what time of year you are reading/consuming this information!
But I am breaking down the five biggest mindset shifts Kate shared, because every family photographer needs to hear them. So let’s dive into these reasons!
This is the one that stops most photographers before they even start. You think, “Nobody wants another email in their inbox, especially from me.”
But Kate made a great point: think about the emails YOU hate getting. They are the ones that feel spammy, irrelevant, or like someone is emailing you three times a day about things you do not care about (looking at you, Sephora promotional tab).
Your emails do not have to operate that way. A good email is interesting, fun to read, useful, and focused on something your reader cares about right now. If a mom in your community reads your email and thinks, “Oh, that is a good idea for our family photos this fall,” you have done your job.
This one hit close to home for me. I will be honest: I used to take every unsubscribe notification like a tiny rejection letter. My brain would go straight to “I must not be good enough” or “my content is terrible.”
Kate reframed this in a way that stuck with me. Sometimes people unsubscribe because the topic is no longer a priority for them. They moved on to a different season. Their kids got older, and they are no longer thinking about newborn photos. It has nothing to do with you.
And here is the flip side: if you never send an email, nobody can unsubscribe. That zero unsubscribe count is not a badge of honor. It means you are not showing up. The number in your email platform means nothing if you do not have a relationship with those people.
Serve the people who want to be there.
Yes, it happens. Someone unsubscribes and leaves a mean comment on their way out. Kate and I both laughed about this because, honestly, who has the time to send hate mail to a stranger on the internet?
Here is how Kate handles it: delete, blacklist, move on. If someone writes something rude, they get removed from everything and blocked from purchasing. Done.
One approach Kate shared from a friend: reply with something like, “I know there is a screen between us, but I wanted to remind you that you sent this to an actual person. Whatever is going on, I hope things get better. But if we do not click, that is okay.”
The bigger point? Do not let a few sour responses stop you from making someone else’s day better. Even if your email just saves a busy mom the mental load of figuring out what her family should wear for photos this weekend, that matters. Do not let the fear of a rare, nasty reply keep you from showing up for the people who need you.
This is the one that gives family photographers permission to breathe.
You do not need to reinvent the wheel every single email. Not every subscriber sees every email you send. Life happens. Their inbox is full. Your message ended up on page two. No one scrolls to page two.
So if you mentioned your fall mini sessions last Tuesday, you can mention them again on Friday. The key is to come at it from a different angle. Share a different benefit. Feature a past client’s experience. Talk about what families can expect during the session.
Kate put it this way: Some people are procrastinators who need that final nudge. Others did not see the first email at all. And some people read every email but still needed to hear the information framed in a new way before it clicked.
You are not being annoying. You are being a good marketer. You are promoting your business (period)!!!!
You might think, “Everyone already knows this. Why would I send an email about something so basic?”
Here is what Kate reminded me: knowing something and doing something are two different things. Your subscribers might know they should book family photos before the leaves change, but they have not yet done so. Your email is the reminder they need to take action!
And if someone has already taken action? They will reply and tell you about it. Boom. You just got a testimonial without having to chase anyone down for it.
Stop assuming your audience is further along than they are. Meet them where they are and remind them of the things they already know but have not acted on.
All five of these mindset shifts boil down to one thing: your people need to hear from you. They signed up for your list because something about your work, your voice, or your perspective resonated with them. Every time you hold back from sending that email, you are choosing your own comfort over their needs.
So send the email. Talk about your offers. Show up in their inbox. And if someone unsubscribes or writes something rude? Laugh, delete, and keep going.
You have got this, you amazing muggle you!

Hi, I’m Dolly DeLong, a Nashville-based family photographer, marketing strategist, and systems educator for family photographers who want structure, clarity, and consistency in their marketing.
My photography journey began in 2006, and over the years, I built a sustainable family photography business while navigating motherhood, client work, and the realities of running a solo creative business. Along the way, I discovered something unexpected: I loved the backend just as much as the creative side.
What started as organizing my own workflows turned into helping other family photographers simplify their marketing, build repeatable systems, and stop relying on last-minute posting or panic marketing.
Today, I focus exclusively on helping family photographers intentionally market their businesses (not with trends but with consistently showing up).
I offer two ways to work with me:
The Family Photographer’s Marketing Society: a systems-first membership that provides a clear weekly marketing cadence for Instagram and email, so you always know what to focus on without starting over.
1:1 Strategic Marketing Support for established family photographers who want hands-on guidance in building a sustainable, SEO-supported marketing system.
Through my blog, podcast, and YouTube channel, I teach family photographers how to think like marketers, plan ahead, and create marketing rhythms that support both their business and their family life.
I still photograph families around Nashville because it’s one of my greatest joys. But helping family photographers build calm, consistent marketing systems that actually fit real life is a close second.
I’m so glad you are here, reading this blog, listening to the podcast, or watching the embedded YouTube video. I hope this educational content was helpful. Please let me know what future systems content you would like me to create.
