If your marketing plan right now is “post a pretty photo on Instagram and wait for bookings,” you are relying on a strategy that stopped working years ago.
That might sting a little, but stick with me. I spent the last several months studying the actual data on how families are finding and hiring family photographers right now, and the path they take from “we should get family photos” to “take my money” looks completely different from what it did even two or three years ago. Are the families booking? They are not finding their photographer through a single channel. They are moving through multiple touchpoints before they ever fill out a contact form.
In this post, I am going to walk you through each stage of the modern client journey so you can see exactly where families are finding photographers, what they do before they book, and which marketing channels actually drive inquiries in 2026. Once you see the full picture, you will understand why some photographers are consistently booked while others are posting on Instagram and hearing crickets.
Before we get into it, I am Dolly DeLong, a Nashville-based family photographer, marketing educator, and business coach for other family photographers. I run the Family Photographer’s Marketing Society, and I have been running my own family photography business since 2018. I am living this out, not just teaching theory. I am booking families while I teach other family photographers how to do the same through backend systems, workflows, and consistent marketing.
Now, let’s get into the data.
The client journey has gotten longer and more complex because families now compare more photographers and take more time before committing.
HoneyBook released its 2025 industry trends report and stated plainly that the client journey is getting longer. Families are not just looking for the right service. They are looking for the right person. AfterShoot surveyed over 1,000 photographers and found that 70% of them say clients are more price-sensitive than they were two to three years ago.
What does this mean for you as a family photographer? You have to stop thinking of marketing as “post one photo and get a booking.” That math does not work anymore. You need to think of marketing as building a system that shows up for families at every stage of their decision-making process.
And I promise you, it does not have to be complicated. We only make it complicated when we try to do everything without a plan.
Families are finding photographers through a mix of referrals, Google search, Google Business Profile, Pinterest, and even AI tools like ChatGPT.
That is not one channel. That is three to five touchpoints before a family ever reaches out to you. Let’s break down the ones that matter most.
Referrals and word of mouth are still the number one business driver for photographers. Shootproof’s data confirms this. When a family loves working with you, they tell their friends. That has always been true, and it will continue to be true. Your past client experience matters more than any single marketing tactic.
But here is where it gets interesting. For photographers who are actively investing in it, SEO is now generating more inquiries than any single social channel. A poll of over 330 photographers in early 2025 found that photographers who had invested in search engine optimization reported it as their top source of inquiries. Not Instagram. Not Facebook. Not paid ads. Google.
Think about that for a second. Your ideal client is a mom. She picks up her phone and types “family photographer in [your city]” or “outdoor family photos near me” into Google. She is not scrolling. She has an intent. She is ready to take the next step. And if your name shows up, you are already ahead of photographers who only exist on Instagram.
If you do not have a blog on your website with posts that include keywords families are actually searching for, you are invisible to an entire category of potential clients who are actively looking for the solution you offer. If writing blog posts for SEO feels overwhelming, the Blogging and Organic Visibility System walks you through exactly how to create search-friendly content that works for you long after you hit publish.
Instagram has shifted from a primary booking tool to a validation tool where families confirm your aesthetic, activity level, and personality before reaching out.
This is the shift most family photographers have not caught onto yet. Instagram used to be the place where families discovered you AND booked you. That is no longer how it works for most photographers. Now, a family finds you somewhere else first, whether through Google, a referral, or Pinterest, and then they check your Instagram to answer three questions:
This is also where your Google Business Profile comes in. Businesses with a complete Google Business Profile appear in 37% more discoverability searches. Profiles with quality images receive 42% more direct requests and 35% more website click-throughs. If you do not have a Google Business Profile set up, it is free. If yours has not been updated since you created it, that is a gap in your marketing that is costing you visibility every single day.

The consideration stage has stretched from days to weeks or even months, with families now following three to seven photographers before they book.
This is the stage that has changed the most since 2023 and 2024. Back then, a family might go from discovering you to booking in a matter of days. In 2026, that timeline has stretched out significantly. Families are now comparing your work, personality, pricing, and process against multiple other photographers. They are reading your captions, clicking through your website, and checking your Google reviews, all very quietly.
This is exactly why I teach the 4C Method inside the Family Photographer’s Marketing Society. You need content at every stage of the client journey, every single week, to stay top of mind as families make decisions. Here is how the four Cs work:
If you are posting only one type of content, such as pretty photos or educational tips, you are reaching families at only one stage of their journey. You are not covering all the bases.
Families typically convert when they see social proof from a family like theirs, feel a time-based reason to act, or see a low-barrier entry point like a mini session.
After weeks or months in the consideration stage, one of these three things usually pushes a family over the edge:
Your job as a photographer is to ensure all three of these triggers appear in your marketing regularly. And yes, you can build a system for that without driving yourself into the ground.
Email marketing delivers approximately $42 for every $1 spent, and a 500-person email list outperforms 5,000 Instagram followers in reach and engagement.
I saved this one for last because it might be the most important point in this whole post. Email marketing is the highest-return-on-investment channel for photographers and business owners across the board. And almost nobody is using it well.
The data backs this up. Emails from photographers have an open rate of approximately 34 to 35%, which is strong for any industry. Meanwhile, Instagram’s organic engagement rate has dropped to somewhere between 0.5% and 2.5%. Your email list is yours. The algorithm cannot take that away from you.
If you have a 500-person email list and you email them consistently, you are reaching more engaged people than if you had 5,000 Instagram followers.
If you are not building your email list right now, make it your priority this month. Create a lead magnet: a what-to-wear guide, a session prep checklist, a location guide for your city. Put it on your website, promote it on your stories, and start growing that list. I have a free resource called the Lead Magnet Master Idea List if you need help brainstorming what to create. Inside the Family Photographer’s Marketing Society, I give members four new lead magnet ideas every single week.
For the email platform itself, I use and recommend Flodesk (my affiliate link includes a discount for you).
The most effective marketing “ecosystem” combines SEO-optimized blog content, a Google Business Profile, an active Instagram presence, and consistent email marketing.
Here are the five things I want you to walk away with after reading this post:
Families are discovering photographers through multiple channels, not just Instagram. Referrals, Google, Google Business Profile, Pinterest, and AI tools like ChatGPT are all part of the picture.
Instagram has shifted from a booking tool to a validation tool. Families check your Instagram to confirm your aesthetic, activities, and consistency, but they usually find you elsewhere first.
The consideration phase is longer than ever. Families follow five to seven photographers before booking. You need content at every stage of the client journey to stay top of mind, and you can develop a system for that.
Email marketing is your highest-ROI channel. A 500-person email list outperforms 5,000 Instagram followers. Start building yours today.
Speed of response matters. When a family fills out your contact form, a fast response can be the difference between booking and losing them. I have a free training on creating a contact page system that responds to inquiries within seconds, even while you sleep. It is built on systems and automation inside your CRM. I use Dubsado for this (30% off with my link).
If you are sitting here thinking, “This makes sense, but how do I actually create content for every stage without losing my mind?” that is exactly why I created the Family Photographer’s Marketing Society. For $40 a month, you get a done-for-you weekly marketing template with a plan for Instagram, email marketing, and SEO.
You do not have to figure this out alone. You just need a system.
How do most families find their family photographer? Most families find their photographer through a combination of referrals, Google search, Google Business Profile, social media, and Pinterest. Referrals remain the top source, with SEO-driven search quickly rising for photographers who invest in it.
Is Instagram still the best way to book family photography clients? Instagram is no longer the primary booking channel for most family photographers. It has shifted into a validation tool where families confirm your aesthetic, activity level, and personality after discovering you through another channel, like Google or a referral.
How long does it take a family to book a photographer? The consideration stage has stretched significantly. Families now follow three to seven photographers and may take weeks or months to decide, compared to the much shorter timelines of 2022 and 2023.
What is the best marketing channel for family photographers? Email marketing consistently delivers the highest ROI for photographers, with an average return of $42 for every $1 spent. SEO blog content is the best channel for generating new inquiries from families who are actively searching for a photographer.
How big does my email list need to be to matter? A 500-person email list with consistent communication will outperform 5,000 Instagram followers in reach and engagement because email open rates (around 34-35%) far exceed Instagram’s organic engagement rate (0.5-2.5%).

Hi, I’m Dolly DeLong, a Nashville-based family photographer, marketing strategist, and systems educator for family photographers who want structure, clarity, and consistency in their marketing.
My photography journey began in 2006, and over the years, I built a sustainable family photography business while navigating motherhood, client work, and the realities of running a solo creative business. Along the way, I discovered something unexpected: I loved the backend just as much as the creative side.
What started as organizing my own workflows turned into helping other family photographers simplify their marketing, build repeatable systems, and stop relying on last-minute posting or panic marketing.
Today, I focus exclusively on helping family photographers intentionally market their businesses (not with trends but with consistently showing up).
I offer two ways to work with me:
The Family Photographer’s Marketing Society: a systems-first membership that provides a clear weekly marketing cadence for Instagram and email, so you always know what to focus on without starting over.
1:1 Strategic Marketing Support for established family photographers who want hands-on guidance in building a sustainable, SEO-supported marketing system.
Through my blog, podcast, and YouTube channel, I teach family photographers how to think like marketers, plan ahead, and create marketing rhythms that support both their business and their family life.
I still photograph families around Nashville because it’s one of my greatest joys. But helping family photographers build calm, consistent marketing systems that actually fit real life is a close second.
I’m so glad you are here, reading this blog, listening to the podcast, or watching the embedded YouTube video. I hope this educational content was helpful. Please let me know what future systems content you would like me to create!
