As a family photographer and a mom myself, I understand the tension many photographers feel when they’re trying to grow their business while also being present with their families.

You want your photography business to succeed.
You want consistent bookings.
But you also want to be available for your kids, your home, and the everyday rhythms of motherhood.

Over the years, I’ve discovered that marketing doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you build simple systems around it.

That’s why I created the Family Photographers Marketing Society—a marketing membership designed specifically for family photographers who want clear, repeatable strategies instead of constantly chasing trends.

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Alayna, one of the members of the Family Photographers Marketing Society, on my podcast and YouTube channel. She shared her honest experience using these marketing systems while raising young kids.

Her story is a powerful reminder that consistent marketing doesn’t require hours every day or a big team behind you.

Sometimes, it simply requires the right structure.

Meet Alayna: A Family Photographer and Busy Mom

Alayna is a family photographer based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, just north of Nashville (to follow and book Alayna, click here)

She’s also a wife and a mom of two young children—a four-and-a-half-year-old and a two-year-old—which means her life, like many moms’, is beautifully full and sometimes chaotic.

She shared that although she has always loved photography, she only officially launched her photography business about two years ago.

Interestingly, Alayna actually came from a marketing background. You might assume that marketing her photography business would come easily because of that experience. But as she explained during our conversation, marketing yourself is completely different from marketing someone else’s business.

Even with her background, she still found herself wondering:

  • Where should I start with marketing?

  • What should I actually post?

  • How do I stay consistent without spending hours on Instagram?

These are questions I hear from family photographers all the time.

Why She Chose to Specialize in Family Photography

One of the things I loved hearing about Alayna’s journey was how intentional she has been about choosing her niche. When she first experimented with photography while living on a military base with her husband, she naturally began photographing families because that was the community around her.

But it wasn’t until she became a mom herself that she truly understood why family photography mattered so much. Now, her business focuses on creating easy and meaningful photography experiences for moms with young children.

She knows firsthand how busy motherhood can be, so she’s built systems into her client experience that simplify everything for her clients. Her goal is to make family sessions feel manageable and joyful rather than stressful.

And as a fellow mom, I absolutely love that mission.

The Biggest Marketing Struggle Many Photographers Face

Before joining the Family Photographers Marketing Society, Alayna said her biggest struggle wasn’t understanding marketing itself.

It was all just overwhelming.

There are so many voices online telling photographers what they should do:

  • Post reels every day

  • Follow the newest Instagram trends

  • Try the latest growth strategy

  • Show up constantly on social media

When you’re already juggling motherhood and running a business, that kind of noise can feel exhausting.

Alayna described how she often found herself scrolling through Instagram, trying to figure out what other photographers were doing. Instead of helping her move forward, it only created more confusion. That’s exactly the cycle I wanted to break when I designed the marketing systems inside my membership.

How the Family Photographers Marketing Society Helps Photographers Stay Consistent

Inside the Family Photographers Marketing Society, members receive a weekly marketing roadmap designed specifically for family photographers.

Each week includes:

  • A simple marketing plan

  • Instagram content ideas

  • Email marketing prompts

  • A batching checklist

  • Guidance on what to promote 6–8 weeks ahead

  • An SEO plan to keep you focused on what matters most

I also include a video walkthrough explaining exactly how to implement that week’s marketing plan.

The goal is to eliminate guesswork.

Instead of wondering what to post, photographers can open the document and immediately see the next step.

That structure is something Alayna said has made a huge difference for her.

A Simple Weekly Marketing Routine for Busy Moms

One of the most encouraging parts of our conversation was hearing how Alayna fits marketing into her life.

Her husband has an unpredictable work schedule, so her own schedule often changes.

Instead of trying to market every day, she created a simple routine.

About once a week, she goes to a local coffee shop and spends three to four hours working on her business.

During that time, she dedicates about one hour to marketing.

That’s it.

One focused hour.

During that time, she:

  • Reviews the weekly marketing document

  • Batches social media content

  • Prepares email marketing

  • Organizes photo or video content for future posts

That small amount of focused time keeps her marketing moving forward without taking time away from her family.

And that’s exactly the kind of balance I love seeing photographers create.

Why Email Marketing Became Her Biggest Business Win

One of the most powerful strategies Alayna implemented from the membership was email marketing.

Before joining, she knew she should build an email list, but she wasn’t sure what to say.

She didn’t want every email to feel like a sales pitch.

Inside the membership, photographers receive weekly prompts that help them write meaningful emails that connect with their audience.

Alayna began consistently emailing her VIP list.

And the results were incredible.

When she launched her Christmas mini sessions, many of her bookings came directly from those emails.

Some people even told her they booked specifically because they saw her email reminder.

This is a great example of why email marketing is so valuable for photographers.

Unlike social media, where your posts may or may not be seen, email allows you to communicate directly with your audience.

The Unexpected Benefit: Less Overwhelm

While booking sessions is always exciting, one of the biggest wins Alayna shared wasn’t about revenue.

It was about peace of mind.

Before joining the membership, she often felt overwhelmed trying to keep up with social media trends and marketing advice.

Now, she no longer spends time scrolling through Instagram trying to figure out what to do.

Instead, she simply opens the weekly document and follows the plan.

That clarity saves time, energy, and mental space.

And for busy moms running businesses, that kind of simplicity is invaluable.

Marketing a Photography Business Doesn’t Require a Full-Time Schedule

One of the biggest myths in the photography industry is that marketing requires constant daily effort.

But Alayna’s experience proves something important.

You don’t need five hours a day.

You don’t need a marketing team.

You simply need a clear strategy and a small amount of focused time each week.

Even one or two hours of intentional marketing can make a meaningful difference in your photography business.

A New Addition in 2026: SEO Training for Family Photographers

In 2026, I added another powerful resource to the Family Photographers Marketing Society.

Each month, SEO strategist Brittany Herzberg joins the membership to teach family photographers how to improve their search visibility.

So far, members have learned:

  • How to research SEO keywords

  • How to create blog content that ranks

  • How to write website pages that attract the right clients

Keywords are one of the foundational elements of SEO because they help search engines understand what your content is about and who it should be shown to.

By combining SEO education with social media and email marketing systems, photographers inside the membership now have a well-rounded marketing strategy.

Encouragement for Photographers Who Feel Overwhelmed by Marketing

If you’re a family photographer who feels overwhelmed by marketing, you’re not alone.

Many photographers are incredibly talented behind the camera but struggle with the business side of things.

That’s exactly why I created the Family Photographers Marketing Society.

It’s designed to give photographers:

  • Structure

  • Clarity

  • Repeatable marketing systems

So they can spend less time worrying about what to post and more time doing what they love—photographing families.

Final Thoughts

One of the greatest joys of running the Family Photographers Marketing Society is seeing photographers like Alayna grow in confidence.

She’s building a business that works alongside motherhood instead of competing with it.

And that’s exactly what I want for every photographer inside the membership. Because marketing shouldn’t feel like chaos. With the right systems in place, it can feel simple, sustainable, and even enjoyable.

Meet Your Favorite Marketing Strategist and Business Coach for Family Photographers (Dolly DeLong Education)

Headshot-of-Nashville-Newborn-Photographer-Dolly-DeLong-Photography-who-is-also-a-marketing-educator-for-family-photographers

Hi, I’m Dolly DeLong, a Nashville-based family photographer, marketing strategist, and systems educator for family photographers who want structure, clarity, and consistency in their marketing.

My photography journey began in 2006, and over the years, I built a sustainable family photography business while navigating motherhood, client work, and the realities of running a solo creative business. Along the way, I discovered something unexpected: I loved the backend just as much as the creative side.

What started as organizing my own workflows turned into helping other family photographers simplify their marketing, build repeatable systems, and stop relying on last-minute posting or panic marketing.

Today, I focus exclusively on helping family photographers intentionally market their businesses (not with trends but with consistently showing up).

I offer two ways to work with me:

Through my blog, podcast, and YouTube channel, I teach family photographers how to think like marketers, plan ahead, and create marketing rhythms that support both their business and their family life.

I still photograph families around Nashville because it’s one of my greatest joys. But helping family photographers build calm, consistent marketing systems that actually fit real life is a close second.

I’m so glad you are here, reading this blog, listening to the podcast, or watching the embedded YouTube video. I hope this educational content was helpful. Please let me know what future systems content you would like me to create!
