Why You Need Liability Insurance for Your Small Business

Why You Need Liability Insurance For Your Small Business by Dolly DeLong Photography

If you’re like most small business owners, you’re probably not super excited by the idea of liability insurance. While this topic isn’t as much fun to talk about as productivity hacks or how to plan killer social media content, it’s just as important.

If you work with people, there’s a good chance you need liability insurance to protect your assets. I’m a photographer, so I have equipment worth thousands of dollars to protect! I’m also frequently in people’s homes and other venues, so I need to protect myself against potential damage to these spaces as well as my own equipment.

The last thing I want is a drunk uncle tripping over my tripod at a wedding reception, knocking an expensive lens on the floor, and spraining his ankle in the process!

Liability insurance will protect you from these uncommon, but totally possible, mishaps.

Liability insurance also helps your small business from claims that come from your normal business operations such as property damage (as discussed), physical injury, defense costs, and personal advertising injuries.

There are two types of coverage a small business owner should consider having

1-General Liability Insurance

-this helps pay for lawsuits if you are alleged to cause bodily injury or property damage.

2-Professional Liability Insurance

-this helps pay for lawsuits if you are alleged to make errors or omissions in the service your business provides.

In other words, general liability protects you against the drunk uncles of the world (aka if someone damages your items at a wedding or a special event), while professional liability protects you from an unhappy customer who doesn’t think you fulfilled your side of a contract.

I source my insurance through State Farm, and I highly recommend working with them! They truly are there for me “like a good neighbor”.

In Summary

If you’re running a side hustle, you may not have taken this step yet. But if you’re serious about running a professional business, you really need insurance coverage. Some states, areas, or venues will require that you have proper coverage before you can operate. Regardless, protecting your business with liability insurance shows you are a true professional who takes your business seriously! And one more time: PSA: *If you are reading this during the COVOID-19 crisis and are quarantined at home, now would be the perfect time to start researching some small business insurance options for your business. Do not put this off on the back burner!*
