Easy At Home Art Project For Toddlers | Nashville Family Photographer | Dolly DeLong Photography

Easy and Simple At Home Art Project For Toddlers

Easy and Simple Sensory Project for your toddler at home

Looking for an easy and simple at-home art project for your little one that is both fun and educational? Check out this quick 20-30 minute project which highlights primary color recognization. It also works as a great sensory activity AND there is an option for a read-along book as well!

I am doing something a little different this week on my blog and I am actually going to be sharing a new sensory art project which I have been doing with my little one (Blaise) to help introduce him to the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) AND it is also a sensory project that is both fun for him to squish with his hands AND eat (since it is edible).  In addition to trying something new (for him), I have been reading a book to him called “White Rabbit’s Colors” which introduces the primary colors in a fun way for his developing mind and he LOVES this book you all! He loves turning the pages and he loves pointing out different colors (when he is actually paying attention that is-haha!)

So for this project, I simply stripped him down to his diapers, put him in his high chair (since it’s still colder outside-or at least it was when we did this project), and I put three different piles of plain yogurt in front of him. In each pile, I put 1-2 drops of food coloring (red in one, blue in another, and yellow in the final one) and he just mixed them together (and ate it of course!)

I made sure to talk to him about the three different colors by pointing them out to him. I also read “White Rabbit’s Colors” to him while he did this little art project. This project lasted between 2-30 minutes in length and he seemed to enjoy himself (mostly just making a mess).

Clean up was incredibly easy, he wasn’t too fussy because he was full from eating yogurt, and afterward, he just played in his play area (the living room) while I worked on lunch!

Items Used

Again here is a list of items I used, that you can either find around your house or you can simply order them on Amazon (just in case you need to stay at home for various reasons):

1- Yogurt (since I have a toddler who needs essential nutrients and key fats for his development and growth-per doctor’s orders-and he isn’t allergic to dairy-we buy full-fat plain yogurt like this) (but if you have yogurt at home, any type would be fine…as long as it’s toddler friendly!)

2- Food Coloring – you can buy a box at your local grocery store (or online)

3- A High Chair with a good tray (to do the art project on)

4- Finally “White Rabbit’s Colors” which is a fun book that introduces primary colors to little ones! white rabbit's colors book

In Summary

So again, nothing too fancy, just a simple sensory art project for your little one to enjoy with you especially now with the quarantine of the coronavirus happening across the states (and if you are reading this in the future, I know you can still do this activity but hopefully with a group of little ones since we won’t have to social distance ourselves!)

I hope this gives some of you some ideas on what you can do with your little ones and it really serves as a good foundation of teaching your little ones about primary colors (and I am all about some fun art projects!)

How I Got The Shot

Also, Do you all want to see a cool before and after? I’m trying to share more behind the scenes of my own work, so if you either are a photographer OR if you are a mom with a nicer camera who is wanting to learn how to use your camera to take better photos of your little one(s) I wanted to share a before and after of my photos of my son from this session:
