Nashville Family Photographer, Dolly DeLong Photography LLC, describes what her Family Sessions look like for parents looking for a fresh family luxury experience

Ever since I became a mom, I have discovered the desire and longing for moments of stillness, quiet, and peace (not because my son drives me insane) but because I am constantly on the go and I feel like my mind is always ON and scattered. My new daydreams now include dreaming of mini spa getaways, massages, someone doing my hair and makeup (because I do not have time to do my hair and makeup anymore), getting a manicure/pedicure, going to a movie alone, going shopping alone, maybe even going to a coffee shop alone. Again, let me stress, I love being a mom and I am slightly obsessed with my son. If you need to know anything about me it should be these facts: I love God, I love my husband, and I am SO in love with my son. But the reality is, sometimes even Dolly Mama needs some time alone and time to recharge and energize.

Backstory

When preparing for our first family photos in early December of 2018, I had no clue how frantic and rushed I would feel because I not only had to get myself ready, I had to get Blaise ready (and feed him, and make sure he was “ready” aka not fussy or angry or hungry). Because of the added layers of stress and the “pressure” of wanting the perfect family photos, I forgot to stop and relax for at least 15 minutes and when I got the photos back  I did not like the way I looked because I knew that I had been stressed out about Blaise’s feeding schedule, my hair and makeup looked disastrous, and I did not have time to clean up the house.  Keep in mind the photographer I worked with did a GREAT job capturing the photos,  she was as sweet as they come, but because I did not take any time out for myself before the session (like actually doing my hair and makeup and thinking through Blaise’s feeding schedule and giving him grace with his feedings and fussy times) I felt stressed the entire time and it actually showed in the photos.

My WHY

After that personal experience, it sparked this idea of wanting to bring a hair and makeup team to my clients who are wanting to do family sessions at their home mostly so that the mom feels comfortable, relaxed and at ease BEFORE the photos are actually taken. Most new moms (or moms with newborns) have absolutely no personal time to get ready before family photos because they are taking care of the needs of all of their children (and sometimes they are getting their husbands ready as well). I believe that family photography sessions are an investment, and I want everyone (ESP the Moms) to feel confident and awesome when they work with me, and when they see the final product I want them to be happy they worked with me. I am already super confident that I can deliver images that families will treasure for years to come, but I want to take an extra step to ensure that Mom feels so happy when she looks back on the photos and when she sees herself she does not cringe because her hair doesn’t look good or her eyes look too puffy, etc. Another added benefit of having me and my hair and makeup team come to your house (or your desired photo location) is that gives you some resting time before the pictures begin, and you as a mom can feed your little one in the comfort of a familiar setting, and Dad (or a trusted relative) can be playing with your other kids in the safety of your own home.

So in other words, I am offering these new luxury family experiences because this is something I would have wanted for myself, and I wish that had been an option for me as a new mom.

For some of you, the idea of hiring hair and makeup for yourself seems a little extravagant… It’s not.

As a mom, I know all too well the time, effort, planning, troubleshooting and fire extinguishing that goes into everyday life…let alone family pictures. I’ve seen many family sessions where everyone is polished, happy, and ready to roll. Then I look up and see mom scrambling to slap on some makeup and desperately trying to fix her hair in the visor mirror.  

Imagine being able to nurse your little one while your hair is being gently styled. Or letting dad run point on the kids in the comfort of your own home, while someone is attending to YOU. What if you could show up to family photos relaxed, confident, and beaming? Not just “managing.”

This is why I want to serve mamas with the extra convenience of bringing in hair and makeup. It’s ok for someone to tend to you for a few minutes with the same love and intention you lavish on your family.

Lady, you are already gorgeous, but I want to indulge you with a little self-care. I want to ensure that you are just as excited about being IN family photos, not just having family photos. While we’re taking family photos, let’s create an experience that EVERYONE in the family can delight in.
