Okay, I know I introduced you to everyone as my fellow mastermind here. But um, do you mind introducing, like, I’d love for you to introduce yourself to everyone like who? Who is Kate dye?

Yeah. Okay, so, well, I am Kate dye. I. Let’s see. I’ll just tell you a little bit about how I kind of got into photography. So I grew up in New Jersey and ended up going to college at Virginia Tech go Hokies. That is also where I met my husband, Tyler, we’ve been we’re coming up on our 10 year anniversary next year, my wise, but I actually went to school thinking that I wanted to be well, I really wanted growing up, I really wanted to be an MTV VJ. And, uh, you might remember this because like you said, we are the same as younger people might have no idea what I mean when I say MTV VJ, but they used to have this contest. I want to be a VGA and like people would line up in Times Square, and I was always too young for it. And I’m like when I turned 18 I’m joining that contest. Well, it didn’t exist by the time I got 80. So I was like, Alright, fine. I’ll go to college. I went to college, and majored in broadcast journalism. But I ended up and I was even like the anchor for entertainment, like E News kind of show like, Yeah, my mom has the old tapes somewhere like I have to go dig them up because they are probably so embarrassing, but hilarious at the same time. Um, but I interned at a new station my senior year. And that is when nobody told me this before that like when you start out in the news, you don’t just go straight to the Today Show

in like very small markets and work your way up. And the thought of moving somewhere by myself at the time was just like, oh my gosh, I can’t do this. So I was already a few months from graduation. So I had this communications degree so I just went into public relations. I spent a few years doing PR for a nonprofit in Washington, DC And I really it just wasn’t for me. So my mom was a teacher growing up, and I decided I had always, um, substitute taught at my mom’s schools just over college breaks and stuff to earn extra money. And I really enjoyed it. So I went back and got my master’s in education. There I spent, let’s see, I would say six years, I think as a second grade teacher, five or six years. But it was at the very last year of teaching my son Hudson, who is now six years old, was born. When he was born, I moved to a new school to be closer to home. But it was kind of this whirlwind serendipitous number of events that all kind of came together that got me into photography. So I had this new veteran home, I was suffering from very bad postpartum depression was just that a really, really low point. I wasn’t I had moved from a school that I completely love was thriving at to this new environment that just wasn’t the greatest fit. So it was just a combination of all these things. And I was very lucky that, you know, I have a support system around me and also I noticed that myself right away that I’m like, I need to get help. I’m not myself. This is not this is above like just like, feeling weepy after baby really was like true postpartum depression. So I went to the doctor got help, started seeing a therapist and the therapist encouraged me, she said, Kate, I want you to come up with a hobby. That has nothing to do with Tyler, your husband, nothing to do with the baby, just something that you can do yourself. And I’m like, Oh, my gosh, I don’t have a hobby, like, is watching Bravo hobby. I guess that’s fine. It still is, by the way, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But I had this Canon Rebel, which I always love a Canon Rebel, because I think it’s like, so many people started on Canon Rebel. Yeah, this Canon Rebel that had been collecting dust in our closet, because I was like, I’m gonna start taking good pictures of the baby when he’s born. That never happened. But I went on Facebook, and I found this class called mom typography. And it was like a three hour class and I went, and it was basically, they just taught you how to shoot in manual that day. So I knew the bare minimum basics of how to shoot manual. And I went home. And I said to my husband, I’m like, I’m going to start my own photography business. And not only am I gonna start a photography, but is I’m gonna get into weddings. And he was like, okay, sure, but if you want to do it, I’m here to support you. Oh, so you know, he’s the best. But truly, I really did not know what I was doing. But it didn’t stop me. I just, I started just practicing on my son Hudson. And I would take those pictures, and I would post them to Facebook. And I would tell people, one of the things I think that I did right from the very beginning, is and I said earlier, in this episode, I have no shame. And I am very much a jump now look for the parachute later type of person, which I know is not everybody’s personalities. But I think it served me well in this situation. Because I would just start I just started telling people like I’ve got the side business. I’m a photographer as well, before I was really a photographer. But my neighbor saw my photos of Hudson on Facebook and asked me to take her Christmas card photos. So I took her Christmas card photos. Her friend saw those took their Christmas card photos, and it just kind of snowballed from there. Gotcha. That first year in photography, I did everything I went to first birthday parties, I did cake smashes, my husband had I found this like DIY PVC pipe structure that you would have backdrops from that I would take to people’s houses. And I would like have pictures of how to set it up. I was I can’t even it makes me laugh that you mount it. Now I didn’t newborns which I had no business doing. But I just really put myself out there. And by the end of the year, I was so busy. With photography and teaching. I’m like something has got to give I can’t do it all not to mention I have this new baby at home. So I’m trying to learn how to be a mom, right? But I’ve really photography really just that first year really helped bring a different part of me to life again, and just brought a lot of joy into my life. And I knew that it was what I wanted to do for the long haul. So I said to my husband, what if I resign from teaching for a year, see if I can grow my business. And we had always wanted to move to Charleston, South Carolina. So we moved to Charleston. We decided to move to Charleston and the rest is history. When I got down here I started booking weddings and now I’m a full time wedding photographer and educator for other photographers as well and I shoot I don’t know Well, I shoot 20 weddings a year. I’m going down to 15 next year, but that is what I do full time

Well, thank you so much for sharing that. And I know, I know, like I wanted you to share that story with the audience. Because that kind of goes into segues into like how you have become the queen of getting raving client reviews, I have dubbed you the queen of reviews. Because you’re so I want you to share with a little bit about your last name and what you call your couples.
Kate Dye
Yes, I can. So my last name is die. And I call my couples, my rider died a couple crows like hashtag rider died couple. And the way that this kind of came about in my business is i Let’s go back to that first year. I’m just going to repeat this because I want if there is anybody who is new, who is listening, I want you to hear this for me. I did not know what I was doing. Like if I look back at those photos, they were not what they are now, but I kept going. But this is what I figured out quickly. I figured out quickly that there are so many photographers out there, right like the our markets are so saturated, I think that is something that scares a lot of people. However, there really is only one you only you can create the kind of experience that you can create, because of the fact that you’re you and nobody else can take that away from you. So if you focus on the people behind your business, the clients behind your business, and you treat people really well, and really go above and beyond and make them feel really special, not just in front of your camera, but just as people that is going to catapult your business. I am a firm believer that if you put people first, it’s like my business model put people first your version of success will follow. So I figured that out very early on in my photography business, when my photos, my photos, couldn’t compete with some of the other photographers, but my client experience could. And that kind of segues in to what I call my ride or die clients. Because I started looking at clients completely different. I have learned so much about like, find your ideal client, get into their head, learn where they shop, learn what their job is learn how old they are. And I was like, Well, wait a minute, this person is this age, but this person works over here. But I love working with both of them. Like, what is the connection, and I had to dig so much deeper than those like create your own ideal client avatar, I had to really think, okay, what is the thing that is connecting? What is the connecting thread and all of this. And it really was that the genuine connection that I could make with those people that it really was the fact that they wanted somebody who would inspire confidence in them, they wanted somebody to have their back, they wanted a friend along the way and not just a photographer, and I started thinking of it like, Okay, I don’t want ideal clients, I want my ride or die clients, the ones that are going to stick with me until the end. And I’m going to stick with them. And they’re going to become these brand new, like loyal brand ambassadors who are going to tell all their friends about me because of the experience that I’ve created. Because of the connection we made. Because of the friendship we made. And now about competing on photos anymore. I’m competing with this unique experience that I’ve created. And that experience when once you hone in on that and once you really find what you bring to the table in terms of treating people really well. Besides just photography, that is when you are going to start to get those raving reviews and that is when people are going to start just they’re good. They can’t even help but talk like they can’t help but not talk about you

to their cert pathway. I completely 110% agree with that Kate and I that kind of like merges into my next question for you and I’ve kind of like set you up for this but um, or queue up for this but why? Why raving reviews specifically like why did you hone in on that?
Kate Dye
Because, okay, I sometimes call myself an accidental business owner right? I never my my path to photography is this winding road. Who knows how I got here. But, um, I’m not a salesperson like sales sometimes scares scares me a little bit. And I think it scares a lot of people who go into business because like we never expected to be here. However, it is an important part of what we do. Well, if you have the raving client reviews to back up your experience, and you can market those, and you leverage those, you don’t have to do the selling for yourself, your clients are actually doing the selling for you. So I think that a lot of people that one of the things I tell people, like new business owners is realize the first thing you have to do is realize the importance of client reviews. I think a lot of people just know like, alright, well, I should get reviews, but they don’t really make it a priority. But realize that if you are able to make that a priority, and we’re going to talk about how like I’ve built this into a workflow system to make it really easy for myself to get one every single time. But if you realize their importance and make it a priority, you are going to start to build social proof. And social proof is basically what like, you’re going to take what you’re the words of your writer die clients right now. And they’re the ones who are spreading the words and spreading the social proof. And people are going to be like, Oh, my gosh, I want that to Yeah, I want to feel that way too. I want to feel that exactly. I want to feel that way too. So very first step is realize how incredibly important reviews are in your business.

So can you share with me just like some steps in getting better client reviews? And what sort of like let’s let’s talk strategy about how to set up a workflow to do that for those of us who are like, Okay, well, look, how do I implement this into my business?

Okay, well, this is going to sound like a very silly next step. But it is crucial, and one that I think a lot of people are missing. The first step in your workflow is you have to just ask, we think that, okay, I’ve created this amazing experience, my clients loved it, they love their photos, because of the experience. They’re going to they’re, they can’t help but write me a review, right? But think about when you’re the client, um, I have two kids, I have my full time business, I have my husband, like, I don’t even know what we’re having for dinner tonight. Um, we’re, we’re about to awake. When I get off this, I’m gonna go downstairs and do my spelling homework with my son. Sometimes it’s not that people don’t want to write you a review. It’s just that like, everybody is so busy. And we have so much going on that if it is not right there in front of them and top of mine, people might just forget. So don’t think that like just, if somebody doesn’t write your review, it could be as simple as you just have to ask them. Yeah. So once you realize that reviews are so important, and you need you know that you need to make the ask what the next thing I would do in your workflow is create an email template. Now, this workflow that I’m going to go into with you is so simple. It is not this complicated thing at all you can and you do not have to have HoneyBook or dubsado or anything like that. To do this. It’s going to great help you if you do, because CRMs just make everything so much easier. However, it’s as simple as creating an email, create an email template that is going to go to all of your clients. That way, it’s already done for you, it’s sitting right there, so that it’s gonna go to every single client. Okay, the next thing is, when we think about reviews, and I’m gonna go back to kind of a few examples of what to say, in your email in a second. But I also want to touch on this. The next thing, once you have this email created, I want you to think about asking for your review in a timely matter. So here’s the way here’s exactly what I do. I asked for a review, exactly a week, after my full gallery is delivered to clients. That way, you are Max, like you are at the peak maximum, like if you think about it as a bell curve, right? For before you and I’m like making all these hand motions like about it, you can’t see me, but I’m gonna try to explain this as best I can, before you deliver some of these gallery to them, they’re getting really excited. You’ve, if you’re one of the things I do for every single client is do a really awesome sneak peek, because that gets them even more excited to get their full client gallery. So they’re getting excited, they’ve seen their Sneak Peek they’re waiting on. And it shouldn’t be that long until you deliver their gallery, but they’re waiting for their gallery. And then the day that it lands in their inbox, they’re so excited, they’re looking at the photos, they’re sharing them like with their spouse, or their family or their friends. They’re putting them on Instagram, they’re putting them on Facebook. So my whole thinking is, I don’t want to wait too long. Because if I wait, like we were just talking about if I wait too long, everybody’s busy. So if you wait a few weeks a month, they’ve already moved on, they’re on to the next thing in life. However, I also don’t want to ask too soon, I don’t want to ask before they even have their full gallery. But I also don’t want to ask like the day after they get their gallery, right, because I want them to just like soak that in and have a few days for it to live with them and be like, Oh my gosh, I love these photos so much. So I have found that a week from when your full gallery is delivered is the perfect time to ask for a review. So if you have something like HoneyBook, or dubsado, I just have a simple workflow set up that it has triggers. So I have an email template for when their full gallery is delivered. And then there is a trigger for one week later, it brings up my email template to go to ask for the review as well, exactly one week after now, if you don’t have something that does this automatically for you, it’s as simple as just mark it on your calendar, give yourself a reminder of that when you’re going to want to send it to them. Next part of the workflow. And I like to think of this not necessarily as workflow, on my end, necessarily, but a workflow for my clients. So one of the one of my secrets for getting not just good review, but a raving review, because those are really the ones we want. I actually this is going to sound counterintuitive. As a photographer, I don’t want my clients to write about their photos and their review.

I want them to write about their experience. The reason I want them to write about their experience is because we already talked about this are so many photographers out there. So many people are providing beautiful photos. What about your experience makes you different? So when I think about that, I want to guide and prompt my clients for to write about my experience. So instead of just saying, hey, so and so client reviews are so important. To me, in my small business, I would love if you were able to write me a review, I actually say to them, I give them guiding questions that I know sentence starters. Yeah, so things like what was the best part of your experience with me? When you look at your images, what do you feel? So things that really focus on like, exactly like I said, the experience of it all. And that is going to take your reviews from just the good good reviews to really ones that rave about you and your experience because you’re making it easy for them. You’re giving them a workflow. They’re not sitting down and looking at a blank cursor on a screen. They actually have those prompts right there and they can take those prompts, and very quickly write your review. You also want to have the links right there so that it’s easy for them to post right away because you can’t post those reviews for them. They have to post them so you want those directly In the email so that they can click on them, go right to Google or the knot or wherever you collect reviews and post them. And also, I know this is like a ton of information. So at the end, I’m like, I have a free download that has all of this in for us, for your listeners. So don’t worry, because I know this is a lot to take it.

And then the final part of the workflow is, so you’ve sent this email your clients are, I haven’t triggered so that it sends a week after and then when I get something back from them that either says like, Hey, I wrote my review, or you know, Google, and the not just alert me like so and so has written you a review, I also have an email template for a thank you. Because you always want to thank people for their time, they’re going above and beyond out of their way for you. So we want to show our gratitude. But then the biggest thing that you need to do, it’s not just enough to have these reviews. Now you need to share them Be your own biggest cheerleader, I am giving you permission. Yes, I want you to hear this. I am giving you permission to be your own biggest cheerleader. Because if you are not willing to cheer for yourself, you’re not inviting other people to cheer you on. There is nothing wrong with sharing all the really good things and celebrating all the really good things no matter how little they may feel, and your business. Every single time I get an amazing review. I’m gonna post it on my Instagram stories. I have Canva templates that are ready to go, I plug in. So this is something I see a lot of photographers do, I and I have a different opinion on this, a lot of people will just screenshot the entire review and post it on their stories. I don’t like to do that I have a camera template. And the reason is, is I like to pull out the most important part of that review that I really want people to focus on. And make that big and center. Because think about how you scroll through social media. Think about how you watch people’s stories. Think about how you consume reels and tic TOCs and all that. Nobody is really stopping to read like two paragraphs worth of information. But if you can quickly if you’re scrolling through something, and you just see like this big sentence that said like, Kate made us feel so comfortable and natural and nothing ever felt awkward. If that’s something you can consume in like point two seconds, that is going to make a difference.

Oh, well, I don’t know about that. But I’ll say yes, they are.

So be your own biggest cheerleader, share those reviews. Sharing your reviews is going to not only like we talked about, get that social proof out there. You’re also going to be training your current clients, because a lot of your current clients are following along on social media and all of that. You’re also going to be training them they’re going to see these reviews and they’re going to be like Oh, Kate’s gonna they’re already gonna have in their subconscious in their mind like Kate’s gonna ask me for review. They’re already gonna see the kind of things that people are writing like I have one of my reviews but right now says K is our forever rider die photographer. I didn’t ask them to write right or die photographer. They just heard that but you better believe that like, oh my gosh, that is like perfect for me and my brand. I’m putting that all over. So then they’re they’re seeing like, and this is not only she gonna ask me for, for view, this is the kind of things that people are saying, yeah, that is going to train them to know that that’s a part of your experience. And that’s coming, which is only going to get you more reviews. It all builds off of each other.

And I know like I have actually taken your your raving reviews, how to get raving reviews mini course might Yeah, yeah, I will have to save like that. Even as a workflow and systems person, I thought that all of my faces were like, you know, streamline great. And just learning about the importance of the off boarding process, which is asking for that review. And following up that has changed the game for me I’ve actually received even like better reviews because your input so thank you.

Oh, you’re so welcome. And I’m so glad you said that because honestly I think that we hear client experience a lot of the time and people tend to think like oh client experience when someone signs on with me. I’m gonna give them a gift. I’m gonna give them their beautiful photos and that’s their client experience. And what we don’t realize is that client experience starts way before I mean, I could talk about this for hours so yeah, this is my jam. I’m like upset client experience but it starts way before people ever find you but it also extends after you have delivered that gallery. So this is a crucial part of your client experience. And even after this you want to continue to nurture those relationships. So it’s just it’s a big part of it.

Yeah, so I have my shop right down that just has like all my email templates and my welcome guides and all that but if you couldn’t tell when I was saying how passionate I am about client experience and how I could talk for hours on it and how I truly believe that it is like all encompassing and is the heart it’s it literally is the heart and soul of my business. And I think that if you make it the heart of yours that there is no stopping you so I have actually I am working on my writer die Client Experience course gonna be my full system of like, everything in my everything every part of my rider declined experience from before people even find me or you know when they discover me on Instagram and social media and all that so before they even inquire me it’s gonna walk you through like, just when people inquire me exactly what I say to them, how I run my client consultations, just every single basically every single part of it through after their weddings and what I do after delay, gallery delivery, and just it’s all encompassing, and it really is a labor of love. A labor of love. You know that Dolly? I’ve been working on it. Yeah, a long time. And listen, this is just this is like totally random. But I want to throw this in there because it has taken me a long time to put this all together. And I know that there’s a lot of moms who probably listened to your podcast, and it’s okay, like if if things ever take you a while or like you’re building at it. I’m kind of going off on a tangent now. But I just think this is what I need. This is what I needed to hear when I was first starting as a mom because I had a newborn at home. It’s okay like slow growth and really building those fruits is okay and like you don’t have to look at everybody else and be like, Oh my God, they’re doing this and they’re doing this. Yeah, I have to get this all done. Like take your time and really do things right. And you will see that that pays off so much in the

end. That is so true. And I like to remind a lot of people to like, even with systems and workflows, it’s just taking baby steps. Oh, gosh, one step at a time. And because I’m still learning, I’m still learning me too, every day. Yeah. So I love that you reminded everybody that So, as you’re taking notes, underline that, highlight it, star it, put a sticker next to it, and just tattoo it on your arm.
